White Mountain
Puzzles of Jackson, New Hampshire began as a poster company in 1978. Partners
Cronan Minton and Ted Wroblewski named their company Mintowski Publications. In
the next ten years, they created illustrated "map posters" of resort areas from
coast to coast. Visitors to Key West, Cape Cod or Aspen would inevitably spot
their colorful maps hanging in hotel
lobbies, restaurants, and gift shops.
In the early 1980s, the partners renamed their growing company White Mountain Graphics. Not until the late 1980s did they create their first 1000 piece jigsaw puzzle -- a detailed illustration of Boston's historic waterfront and North End. The artwork was designed as a poster for White Mountain Graphics by Massachusetts illustrator John Roman. As luck would have it, a customer suggested that it would make a wonderful puzzle. Within months of distributing their first puzzle, Minton and Wroblewski realized that their future lay in puzzles. The company was renamed White Mountain Puzzles. Suddenly, resorts such as Martha's Vineyard, Nantucket, Sanibel & Captiva, and Killington not only had bird's-eye view posters, they also had entertaining 1000 piece puzzles.
Since 1990, Minton and Wroblewski have expanded
their puzzle line to include states, regions, and educational themes such as
Presidential history and Civil War history. White Mountain Puzzles is perhaps the
only puzzle company in America with its own studio of artists. Popular puzzles
such as The World of Cats, The World Dogs, State Birds & Flowers, State Flags &
Capitols, and The Music Room were created in house. They are filled with
information. The company also licenses famous artists such as Sandra Kuck, Fred
Swan, Paul Landry, Bonnie Marris, and Nicky Boehme. In short, White Mountain
Puzzles was originally a poster company with artwork that looked like puzzles.
Thanks to an insightful customer, the posters eventually became puzzles,
which
is what they should have been all along!
